Mission 13: Splurge Strategically

I have to admit that this is my absolute favorite mission.

I adore chocolate and quite a lot of what’s considered junk food – burgers, fries, pizza, chips, and cookies.

People are always asking me how I can eat that stuff yet stay slim. This mission is the answer: I splurge strategically.

Splurging strategically helps me to stay slim and – just as important for a chocoholic – it helps me to stay sane!

But there are two keys to splurging strategically – knowing what to eat sometimes, and knowing what to eat pretty much never.

Let’s tackle them both now.

This mission was great timing for me. I think I love so many things – but really there are things I could take or leave. I look forward to really considering my options this coming week and slowly changing the way I think about treats and food in general.

Our group decisions are: If you are a chocoholic eat three small pieces of your favorite chocolate and this should keep you from gaining weight. Eat turkey burgers; purchase frozen fries: tater tots, French fries only have 1% salt. But it must be frozen. In the healthy food section of your grocery store you can purchase unsalted potato chips; however, there is a warning on the bag that a small amount of salt is necessary to make the product. Eat sugar free cookies.
Michele belongs to a gym and does body combat to lose her weight. I do not recommend for our group but this but is an option.
There are rare people around that can eat anything and never gain weight. It is their body metabolism. Our group has known a few people like this.
If you don’t let yourself eat it at all you will probably because anorexic or bulimic [the best example would be the death of Karen Carpenter anorexia weakened her heart and caused death.
Have a craving eat a smidgen of your favorite deserts/food you should not affect your diet or going to a social event follow this same principal. To start cut your meal portions in half to eventually reduce the amount of calorie saturated foods.
Eat sweet potato fries or cook frozen fries. Eat a small piece of cake on your birthday. If you get a craving for cake on a social event share a piece with your friend or family.
This is a work in progress if we have yogurt or sherbet ice cream we still have to have a chocolate or caramel topping.
Eat turkey burgers as they are healthier for you. Pizza is a favorite with a wheat crust is healthier for you.
Drinking a small glass of red wine per day will help keep your arteries cleaned out. This does work.
We recommend just placing the bag of treats in a cupboard or plastic container which would be out of sight.

Do you have a craving or
sweet tooth eat a smidgen of your favorite desert/food and it should not affect
your diet. When attending a social function during the Thanksgiving and
Christmas Holidays follow this same principal.

I exercised my “splurge strategically” mindset on the weekend. My nephew had a party for his 2nd birthday. Typically, the party food included everything I would normally delve into. Just because I could… and it would be rude not to… right? LOL. However I exercised restraint until the birthday cake arrived, and then rewarded myself with a small piece. I bragged to my husband that night about how ‘good’ I was at the party. I don’t think he believed me! It doesn’t matter. I know, that for me, not taste-testing every treat was a big change in behavior. And you know what, I’m pretty pleased with myself 🙂

I love this mission. I used to go for all the sweets practically but for the last few months, I have cut down a lot. I love my chocolate and candies but I only have them occasionally. Some people say that I am depriving myself of good stuff like pizza, MacDonalds but I don’t. If I really feel like it, I’ll get some but just a small piece to satisfy. I don’t feel deprived! I feel very good:)
When I used to make cake or cookies, I would eat quite a bit of dough. But I got victory this week, I made a cake for my friends at church and did not go into the dough. I had a small piece of cake in the evening and was satisfied. I have come a long way. I am making a cake this week for a special celebration and it will go well and I will have also a piece:) My daughter gets her diploma this week and her party and I can’t wait to have a piece of cake that my neighbor is making:)
