Day 12: Grow Your Weight-Loss Support Network | 30-Day Weight Loss-athon
12
Apr
It’s time for Day 12 of the 30-Day Weight Loss-athon.
All tasks in the 30-Day Weight Loss-athon are adapted from the 52 Weight Loss Missions program.
Read the steps first, then take 10 minutes to think about them and take action. Ready?
What You Need:
- A desire to share support.
Step 1
As well as the people already in your life, you may want to expand your weight-loss support network.
Did you know that people who use online support to motivate each other are less likely to give up on their exercise programs?
With 52 Weight Loss Missions, you have a built-in support network via the online check-ins and Facebook Page. You can always check in at one or both of these places to get encouragement, share ideas, tell of your successes, or enjoy the camaraderie with your mission-mates.
The great thing about having a weight-loss support network is that whether you give or receive, you gain.
Others can help you by sharing their tips and ideas, encouraging you, and patting you on the back when you do well.
But when you help others, it reinforces the things you’re learning and helps you crystallize your own discoveries – so helping others helps you, too.
Step 2
So let’s get some support!
Here are some ideas for upgrading your support network:
- Ask a friend if they’d like to be your exercise buddy
- Ask a friend if they’d like to do a healthy cooking course with you
- Work with a personal trainer – by yourself or in a small group
- Work with a nutritionist or dietician
- Join a gym or group fitness program, where you’ll meet others with similar goals
- Join or start a walking group at work
- Get some friends to share the 30-Day Weight Loss-athon journey with you:

See you tomorrow!
Oh no! I only just found out about this 30 Day Weight Loss-athon. I’m 12 days behind. LOL!
I have my workout and healthy eating partner in my husband!
My husband is a good support. He has agreed to walk with me once a week.
12 days already! This is certainly going by quickly. I have shared on Facebook for today’s mission.
My hubby and a girlfriend are my walking partners. Due to work schedule, routine out of kilter. Must get back on track when I figure out what my ‘new normal’ will be.
I have 3 FB friends doing this with me, another friend who is a once-a-week walking buddy, am a member of a sports club where I swim 3x/wk, and LOVE your idea of finding a friend to do a healthy cooking coarse with me!
My friends that joined this with me are my support group… Janice, Susan, Amber, Jessica, Dee (who else am I forgetting? Sorry). Y’all are wonderful!
I just signed up for wellness coaching through our insurance. It is just another support so I know I will have a bi-weekly meeting to check in on how I am meeting the goals set.
Right now I have a personal trainer, nutritionist and group that I work out with to hold me accountable. I also go to the gym and attend their yoga classes. I have a good group of people to rely on 🙂
I was surprised to find out how much help an online support group could be. Not only reading the posts of others but checking in makes me feel more accountable.
I’m on My Fitness Pal and Fitbit groups online. I’m taking a year-long class through Big Picture Classes called “Move More Eat Well”. I also blog and post my weight loss journey there. I do all my walks with my hubby. I’m in a Tai Chi class. Support and reminders everywhere I turn!
I am already enrolled on a gym programme that has a special co-ordinator & when I’m fitter, I shall be going to a circuit class for people who need to lose weight run by the same person. I also start an 8 week walking for health course which will be with a group of other people 🙂
I joined a gym and I’m taking zumba classes every saturday. I also have a friend who is trying to lose weight. We check in with each other on our weight loss struggles and share recipes.. I’m trying to get her to come with me to class.
My dog is my walking partner and he’s a good motivator! Even when I get home from work and think I’m too tired to walk he will pester me until I give up and go. And I always feel so much better when we get back home! And the postive feedback I’m getting from here is helping, too! 🙂
I got a pedometer for my husband so he could do the step challenge with me. He’s currently unemployed and putting on some weight. We were shocked how little activity he was getting. Now we’re both trying to take more steps, walk more each day.
humm..
Online support with you! Check!
However, I once started a Facebook group for friends to encourage each other, but it didn’t work! Unless we all have the REAL goal and motivation it won’t work!
As for food, I have several cooking books, and starting this year, I picked up a book every month, wrote down name/page of recipes that go with my diet, and I make numerous of them as much as my time allows me. It is really great and I learn new recipes too!
I have a friend who started the 17 day diet back in Jan and she is my support system. We walk together once a week and teach together everyday. She’s great with the eating out tips and the thousand questions and frustrations I am going through.
I have a FB group where I can post daily what my exercise will be/was for the day and it is also a place where I make a mistake they are there to support and encourage me to continue. I also like to write, so I decided to start a blog about my weight issues and what I am doing to overcome them. I also have a FB friend that the plan is to get together at least once a week to walk together. It will be our way of catching up and exercising.
I have a neighbor I walk with. I also logged on to a weight loss website I use that offers blogs, I’m going to start a blog about my weight loss goals. I’m looking into a new fitness center next week and hope to connect with a personal trainer. I am going to work hard to keep reaching out to other people for support.
I have found it’s difficult to get others to stay with it. That’s not to say I haven’t bailed before myself! But I’ve tried having a walking group, helping people train for a local 5K, etc. and haven’t had much success. But, like Shirley below, I kind of like walking alone now too. However I have a Y membership and need to go back! After this wk. my schedule will go back to “normal” and I will have to do that!
