Day 12: Grow Your Weight-Loss Support Network | 30-Day Weight Loss-athon
12
Apr
It’s time for Day 12 of the 30-Day Weight Loss-athon.
All tasks in the 30-Day Weight Loss-athon are adapted from the 52 Weight Loss Missions program.
Read the steps first, then take 10 minutes to think about them and take action. Ready?
What You Need:
- A desire to share support.
Step 1
As well as the people already in your life, you may want to expand your weight-loss support network.
Did you know that people who use online support to motivate each other are less likely to give up on their exercise programs?
With 52 Weight Loss Missions, you have a built-in support network via the online check-ins and Facebook Page. You can always check in at one or both of these places to get encouragement, share ideas, tell of your successes, or enjoy the camaraderie with your mission-mates.
The great thing about having a weight-loss support network is that whether you give or receive, you gain.
Others can help you by sharing their tips and ideas, encouraging you, and patting you on the back when you do well.
But when you help others, it reinforces the things you’re learning and helps you crystallize your own discoveries – so helping others helps you, too.
Step 2
So let’s get some support!
Here are some ideas for upgrading your support network:
- Ask a friend if they’d like to be your exercise buddy
- Ask a friend if they’d like to do a healthy cooking course with you
- Work with a personal trainer – by yourself or in a small group
- Work with a nutritionist or dietician
- Join a gym or group fitness program, where you’ll meet others with similar goals
- Join or start a walking group at work
- Get some friends to share the 30-Day Weight Loss-athon journey with you:

See you tomorrow!
I have a couple of workout buddies at work. We take our lunch breaks and go to the little gym in our office building and do a 30 minute DVD four times a week. I also have a wonderful group of women for support in other areas on Spark People. A lot of us have been together and sharing our stories for the past six months. I feel like I have a great online family with these women.
I joined a swim aerobics class with my counsin a few weeks ago. Since joining we got another cousin to come along. I have also shared the idea with some coworkers. One of them is joining soon as doc releases her (recent surgery) and the another in a few weeks after she finishes some college classes. I also joined caloriecount.com…. lots of support, lots of recipes, lots of exercise ideas….great site!
I actually like doing my exercise alone….its my private thinking and relaxing time. But as far as sharing the support, I am supporting my boyfriend through his weight loss too!
With my family and friends support, that keeps me motivated!
My children have been a great support they take walks with me, I am also joining some groups at myfitness pal.
When I see my friends’ comments it keeps me motivated. I don’t feel like a brisk walk today but I’m doing it anyway!
I have a lunch walking buddy, as well as my hubby on weekends and nights when the weather cooperates. and my sister is checking in here as well.
Joined Snap. Worked with training on initial workout plan. Need to find a way to manage the nutrition side better. The app is helping tracking…..need to figure out how to get rid of the excuses for time management on improving this one. hmmmmmm
ok, I’ll have to start thinking about this. I’m doing myfitnesspal.com and I have my mom, sister and sister-in-law there to encourage me. It would be good to have an exercise buddy, but then I have to do things when they can….I just don’t have a set schedule so it’s hard to commit to that. I’ll keep thinking.
Been working on this one for quite some time and happy to say that my canasta buddies and I have all seen the benefits of helping each other through the daily struggles to get healthier. Down another 3 lbs this week.
My employer strongly encourages and promotes wellness, and I have a great support system in the office I work in. I have also contacted a friend who is a dietitian to help me not to mention another friend to hold me accountable (doesn’t hurt that she is a doctor). 🙂
Sharing with my family and friends has been about as far as I’ve gone, although my posts do appear on my Facebook page. I am happily using the My Fitness Pal daily, which is an educational tool, as well as reinforcement of my goals and efforts. My goal is to lose around 1/2 pound a week, till I reach my desired weight and then to maintain it.
My daughter comes to the gym with me a lot of the time, and she also comes for walks with me when she is avaialble.
I have a friend from church that is on Myfitnesspal and we support each other in our program and in prayer.
I signed up in November to a fitness club and I have a special program to help me get in shape with 14 evaluations of 30 minutes with a counselor during the whole year, where he adjusts my program, mesures me and encourages me. With that program here, I even get naturopathy receipt so my membership comes out cheaper. Since I signed up at the gym on November 10, 2011 I have lost 13 pounds and about 5 3/4 inches of fat:)
I also have my mom who is very supportive also:)
I have 2 walking buddies and a FB friend doing this with me. I will look for someone else on FB to be accountable to because I know when I am accountable to someone I do what I need to do.
I’ve found that my “support” isn’t much help as we all seem to have the same problem of not staying motivated for more than a few days / weeks at the most. I can only rely on myself to a point, but when I get down or not wanting to get moving – I can’t seem to find anyone to give me that little “push”. Not trying to sound like a defeatist, just honest.
To me this is about making a commitment to a healthier lifestyle. My family support me but in the end I need to do it!
My eldest daughter and I are going to start walking together. She’s been told by a health professional she needs to exercise more so walking together will help us both.
I really prefer walking alone, I can go at my own pace, think my own thoughts. I found on Map My Fitness different group walks in my area, I might check those out eventually. I do like the positive feedback from here and from my nearly DIL. Thanks for all the motivation.

Being a little short sighted, I forgot about my Move More Eat Well group which is exactly about motivation and support. I whined a little and got good feedback. It’s a beautiful day, and I’m going to take a little walk.
my son has come on all my walks with me, starting to notice how much quicker it takes to do the same distance, have noticed I have a lot more energy this week, and I have lost another kilo on today’s weigh in, that’s 6kg since10th Jan, Thanks Michelle for getting me motivated, off for my second walk today now!
