Day 6: Drink Water, Lose Weight | 30-Day Weight Loss-athon

Time for Day 6 of the 30-Day Weight Loss-athon.

Read the steps first, then take 10 minutes to complete them.

Move fast, act quickly and stop over-thinking. Ready?

What You Need:

  • Glass
  • Bottle
  • Water.

Step 1

First, let’s get the facts. We’ve all heard that drinking water helps weight loss, but is it really true?

The answer, according to scientific research, is yep!

It seems that good old H2O can help with weight loss by:

  • Helping you to eat less and/or
  • Affecting your metabolism.

And you don’t have to go crazy: a couple of glasses before meals is a good start.

But remember, it’s not what you know, it’s what you do. Just deciding to drink more water is easy – turning it into a habit is the tricky part.

Step 2

So let’s look for ways to make water drinking easy and habitual.

For instance, you could adopt any or several of these habits:

  • Drink 2 glasses of water on waking – keep a glass and bottle by your bed as a reminder
  • Fill a 2-litre bottle of water at the start of the day and aim to empty it by the end
  • When offered a drink, ask for water
  • Keep a bottle and glass of water on your desk as you work, so it’s easy to sip any time
  • Keep a bottle and glass of water on the coffee table when you’re reading or watching TV, so it’s easy to sip any time
  • Buy yourself an attractive water bottle or glass so you enjoy drinking more
  • Associate meals with water – have a drink before you sit down to eat.

Step 3

Of course, in this program we never make a decision without taking some sort of action to help change the behavior.

So choose something you can do now to help set your new water-drinking behavior.

For example:

  • Put a glass and bottle of water by your bed, desk or coffee table
  • Fill a 2-litre bottle of water for today’s drinking
  • Go buy yourself an cute water bottle and/or glass
  • Put a glass on top of your plates as a reminder to drink before or with meals.

Drinking water as we speak. I always drink my water in the mornings, it’s remembering for the rest of the day. As I have tons of water bottles that don’t seem to inspire me. I will focus on 2 glasses before each meal and before bed. That makes 8 cups for the day. A squeeze of lemon is always a good way to add some flavor minus the calories.

  2. Shana McAuley says:

I keep a glass at my desk and refill it often. Since I gave up pop there isn’t much else calling to me in terms of drinks. Except Starbucks but I have been staying away. Just water! I haven’t tracked how much I actually drink. I’ll try to keep track this coming week to see if I am reaching the 8 glasses per day.

  3. Emma Hutley says:

I keep a bottle of water by my bed to drink in morning at night. And lately at work I keep a bottle or glass of water on my desk to drink throughout the day. Definitely drinking more water than I was a month ago but room to improve even more!

  4. Kelly Williams says:

I’m normally a person who only drinks water if she is thirsty so this one is going to be difficult for me. In the past I’ve tried to drink 8 glasses or water and always give up by the second day bcos it gives me a headache. I think the headache comes bcos I’m drink a lot more water to what my body is used to so I’ve decided I’m going to start with one glass today, then two tomorrow, then three the following day and build it up to 8 glasses. I like the idea to drink a glass of water before each meal so I might use that to help me with the increased water intake.

When I started my journey over 2 years ago, I hated water and was perpetually dehydrated. Now this is a breeze. I fill up my Brita pitcher the night before and almost always empty the large container in a day!

  6. Rebecca Cobbing says:

Playing catch up here. This one will be easy. I really like water, I just have to try and tweak some habits. 5 years ago I was drinking 6-8 liters of cola a day, now I might have one soda a day, which I will dilute with mineral water. I probably drink way too much coffee (even if it is black and sugar free) I have stuck a post it note on my coffee machine to remind me to have a glass of water first. This will be especially helpful in the mornings as the first thing I do when I get up is go the coffee machine. I’m also going to ditch my 1/2 sodas and stick with fresh lime and water.

  7. Tracey Dionne Gubbins says:

I bring 100 ounces of ice water with me to work everyday. Most days I finish that before I leave work. Then I try to drink more at home at night. Do you think I can count all those minutes I spend walking to the bathroom towards my exercise minutes?

  8. Lauren Bauer says:

I work in water and drink it constantly so this is an easy task for me yay! 😀 FYI to others, a few retailers like target and albertson’s grocery sell a water bottle with a counting ring that you twist to track your consumption. Confession I have three of them. lol

  9. Lori Prall Jeffries says:

This should be an easy/(ier) challenge for me. I gave up the bulk of my sodas a few years ago. However, I have become lazy about drinking water throughout the day. SO, Today, I am going to renew my efforts by drinking two glasses of water when I get up and keeping water with my at all times. I have a Tyvek cup. that I keep with me. I love it because it keeps my water cold when I leave it in my car for short periods of time (No small feat for El Paso, Texas).

If you know me, you know I love my sweet tea and I gladly gave it up in hopes that it will help me on my weight loss adventure and make my brain and body work better. I don’t really know how much I drink in a day because I have a 2.5 gallon jug in the fridge and I constantly refill my water bottle and with my husband and kids joining me in the water consumption I just have to guess some days I am better than others on it but at least I cut out 90% of the sweet tea, honestly I cant remember the last time I made a gallon at home 🙂

  11. Dawn Witt says:

This is going to be my biggest challenge thus far! I am not a water drinker – no flavor, but a taste. So, I guess I will be buying stock in lemons! I’ll have to pretend I’m at a four-star hotel and put lemon water pitchers around the house.

  12. Nancy Munson Smith says:

I am so ready for this, brought a large cup with top and straw to keep at work, fill it up as soon as I get there and refill at lunch. Have been getting in the habit of having water with lemon at meals rather than soda.
